Measles Outbreak in New Zealand: 17 Cases and Rising (2026)

A measles outbreak is currently sweeping across New Zealand, with the total number of confirmed cases now reaching a concerning **17!** This news comes as another case has been identified in Auckland, linked to a previous case originating from overseas. But here's where it gets critical: the situation is unfolding across multiple regions, including Northland, Auckland, Taranaki, Wellington, and Nelson.

Health Minister Simeon Brown has responded, stating that more Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccines are on their way, with an additional 28,000 doses expected soon, supplementing the 117,000 already in storage. He's urging everyone to ensure they are fully vaccinated to help curb the spread.

Pharmac, the pharmaceutical funding agency, has reassured the public that they maintain a significant safety buffer of vaccines. They highlight that, on average, around 15,000 doses are used each month. During the 2019 outbreak, the total usage was 88,130 doses over two months. Based on these figures, they are confident in their ability to meet the current demand.

Demand for vaccines has surged, especially in Wellington, where hundreds are considered close contacts. This rise is also noticeable in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Whangārei. Pharmac is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to source extra stock if necessary.

And this is the part most people miss: Dr. Oz Mansoor, Tairāwhiti Medical Officer of Health, estimates that over 500,000 New Zealanders are susceptible to measles due to vaccination levels. He strongly encourages all New Zealanders to check their immunization records. You can do this by consulting your GP or calling the free Vaccination Helpline at 0800 28 29 26.

A particularly challenging situation is unfolding at Wellington Girls' College. The school is working to trace over 900 close contacts of a student infected with measles. The infected student was in class on Tuesday and attended prizegiving events on Wednesday. As a result, Year 9-11 students have been asked to stay home until Wednesday, and school trips and events have been canceled. Staff will be available to assist students in collecting any necessary items for the next few days.

This situation raises important questions. What are your thoughts on the current vaccination efforts? Do you believe enough is being done to address the outbreak? Share your opinions in the comments below!
