Get ready for a thrilling revelation! Matthew Lillard's return as Stu Macher in 'Scream 7' is a surprise that has fans buzzing. It's been almost three decades since Lillard first portrayed Stu, one of the iconic killers in the original 'Scream' alongside Skeet Ulrich's Billy Loomis. But here's where it gets controversial...
Lillard, now 55, was shocked to learn he'd be part of the seventh installment, especially after Kevin Williamson, the filmmaker behind the first four 'Scream' movies, previously denied fan theories that Stu was still alive.
"I was on a walk, chatting with my business partners at Find Familiar Spirits, when Williamson called me out of the blue," Lillard recalled. "I put the call on hold and picked up the phone, and he asked me to come back. I was stunned!"
'Scream 7' marks Williamson's directorial debut, taking over after the passing of original director Wes Craven in 2015. Lillard's excitement is palpable as he describes the film's testing, saying, "It's through the roof!"
But here's the part most people miss: Lillard has kept the details of Stu's return a secret. "I'm usually terrible at keeping secrets," he admitted. "But I haven't told a soul how or why Stu comes back."
The trailer for 'Scream 7', released in October, ended with Stu's voice saying, "This is gonna be fun!" Lillard revealed he had no idea this line would be used.
"In this business, your power lies in saying yes or no. Once you say yes, you have no control over how it's used," he explained.
Other returning cast members include Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott and Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers, as well as David Arquette and Scott Foley, whose characters were killed off in previous films.
Skeet Ulrich, who played Billy Loomis, was initially set to return for 'Scream 7' but was replaced after Melissa Barrera, who played Billy's daughter Sam Carpenter, was fired for posting about the Israel-Hamas war.
Ulrich, who returned for the fifth and sixth movies, said, "I'm not involved, but I'm excited to see what Kevin Williamson has in store. I used to know the full plot, and it was really interesting, but now I'm in the dark too."
Williamson, when asked about his return, said, "It's been awesome. I've always been on the fringes of the last few 'Scream' movies, as the granddaddy of the franchise."
'Scream 7' hits theaters in February 2026, and fans can't wait to see how Stu Macher makes his comeback. Will it live up to the original? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: this chapter is sure to be a scream-worthy thrill ride!
