A former Manchester United scout has called out the club for their handling of a young talent, Álvaro Carreras, who is now thriving at Real Madrid. This story is a cautionary tale of missed opportunities and the potential consequences of not nurturing young, ambitious players.
The Rise of Álvaro Carreras
Carreras, a left back, arrived at Manchester United at the tender age of 16 in 2020. He quickly adapted to the new environment, learning the language and showing great promise. In fact, he was named the Denzil Haroun Reserve Team Player of the Year in 2021-22, an award that has previously been won by the likes of Nicky Butt and Darren Fletcher. This recognition should have been a sign of his potential, but unfortunately, his journey at United took a different turn.
The Beginning of the End
The arrival of manager Erik ten Hag marked the beginning of Carreras' loan spells. From the start of the 2022-23 season, he was sent out on loan to Preston North End, Granada, and finally, Benfica, where he was eventually signed permanently in 2024. United's decision to let him go has been criticized by former scout Piotr Sadowski, who believes it was a massive mistake.
"United gave up on him, and in the end, sold him to Benfica for a pittance. He's a world-class player in the making. There's a very real chance he'll become one of the best left backs in the world. It's a huge error on United's part, and I believe it's down to their reluctance to invest in and trust young players," Sadowski said.
Carreras' Perspective
Carreras himself has spoken about his time at United, admitting that he still carries a chip on his shoulder from that period. He believes that if young players deserve an opportunity, they should be given one. Instead, he was told to go out on loan, with Ten Hag not counting on him for the first team. Carreras had to leave and prove himself elsewhere, and he did just that at Benfica.
"I was told to gain experience and rhythm, and that they'd see what happens in the future. But I had to make my own future, and I'm glad I did," Carreras said in an interview with The Athletic.
Real Madrid's Gain
After an impressive 2024-25 campaign with Benfica, Real Madrid snapped up Carreras for a fee of €50 million. He has since become an integral part of their team, with no outfield player in La Liga having played more minutes than him this season. His story is a testament to his talent and determination, but also a reminder of what could have been for Manchester United.
So, here's the question: Was United's decision to let Carreras go a mistake, or a necessary move to make way for other players? And what does this say about the club's approach to youth development? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
