This nifty feature, dubbed 'Edge Light,' casts a rectangular glow around the edges of your screen. But it's not just a static light show. Apple's Neural Engine intelligently adapts the light's positioning based on where your face is detected in the video frame. Talk about smart!
What's more, you get some control over the lighting. You can adjust the warmth or coolness of the light to suit your preference. And if your environment gets dim, Edge Light can automatically kick in. It's designed to be unobtrusive, too – it won't cover the top menu bar, and it moves out of the way if your cursor hovers over it, ensuring you can still use your laptop as usual during a call.
But here's where it gets interesting... Edge Light is slated to be available exclusively on MacBooks from 2024 onwards that are powered by Apple's Silicon. While it may not completely replace a dedicated ring light, it's a definite upgrade from the old trick of opening a bunch of blank Google Docs to brighten your face for a last-minute meeting.
