A haunting reminder of nature's raw power, the beautiful Nefyn Bay in North Wales faces a growing threat as climate change intensifies. The surrounding cliffs, already scarred by multiple mud slumps, are a ticking time bomb. On that fateful morning in 2001, a series of catastrophic landslides occurred, claiming a life and injuring another.
The cliffs, towering up to 200 feet, have been unstable since the end of the last Ice Age. As the Irish Sea Ice retreated, it left behind a messy geological legacy - a mix of silt, gravel, and clay that's weak and permeable. Heavy rain, like the kind that fell in 2001, exposes these weaknesses, leading to landslides.
Most of these landslides are shallow, but they can be devastating. The 2001 slide, 60 meters wide, engulfed vehicles and pushed them down onto the beach. Another major slide in 2021 left properties teetering on the edge, a stark reminder of the power of nature.
But here's where it gets controversial: scientists have identified an unusual feature in these landslides - a fast-moving earthflow, or 'run-out', that can travel up to 100 meters across the beach. This phenomenon, coupled with the expected increase in heavy rainfall due to climate change, poses a significant risk to the area.
A research paper by BGS scientists highlights the low risk posed by most of the cliff failures, as they only affect small areas. However, they warn that the danger rises significantly when roads, buildings, and residential properties are involved.
And this is the part most people miss: the coastal path that traverses the top of the cliff. While the risk of a landslide coinciding with a walker is relatively low, tension cracks observed in 2006 indicate a considerable potential hazard. With a forecast increase in extreme weather events, the risk of a significant landslide in Nefyn Bay is very real.
Remediation work after the 2001 slide has mitigated some risks, but predicting future landslides is difficult. The BGS researchers emphasize the need for continued monitoring and adaptation to changing climatic conditions.
