Kyiv Under Attack: Russia Strikes Residential Buildings with Missiles and Drones (2025)

A chilling and devastating scene unfolded overnight in Kyiv, as Russia unleashed a massive aerial assault, targeting residential areas and critical infrastructure. The attack, which involved hundreds of drones and missiles, left at least 12 people injured and caused extensive damage to buildings across the city.

The Kyiv City Military Administration reported that the Russians were specifically targeting residential buildings, with many high-rise structures affected. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that at least 11 multi-story buildings were struck during the attack.

Among the impacted areas, a five-story residential building in the Dniprovskyi district was hit by drone debris, while a separate fire broke out on the 12th floor of another apartment complex. Fires were also reported on the 10th floor of a building in the Podilskyi district and on the roof of a five-story structure in the Solomianskyi district.

In addition to residential buildings, a medical facility and an administrative building were damaged in the Holosiivskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts, respectively. Several car fires were also reported in the Darnytskyi district, and sections of the district heating network were damaged, according to Mayor Klitschko.

As buildings burned and residents sought safety, Ukraine's Air Force reported waves of drones targeting central, southern, and eastern regions of the country. Monitoring groups estimated that over 120 drones and decoys were headed towards the capital. The Air Force also confirmed the launch of dozens of cruise and ballistic missiles towards various regions of Ukraine.

In Kyiv Oblast, six people, including a child, were injured in the attack. Governor Mykola Kalashnyk reported that homes, warehouses, industrial sites, and cars were hit, with four victims hospitalized due to cuts, burns, and head injuries. A 7-year-old boy suffered a facial injury and received medical treatment.

Air defenses were activated in the capital, and air raid alerts were issued nationwide due to the threat of a missile attack. Russia's large-scale attacks on Ukrainian cities have been a recurring nightmare since the start of Moscow's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

In recent months, Moscow has intensified its assault on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, aiming to plunge the country into a harsh winter. The most recent large-scale attack on November 8 was described by then-Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk as one of the largest direct ballistic missile attacks on energy facilities since the beginning of Russia's invasion.

This attack resulted in over 12 hours of emergency power cuts in Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, as authorities struggled to stabilize the energy situation.

The ongoing war in Ukraine continues to wreak havoc, and the latest developments highlight the urgent need for a peaceful resolution. As the conflict rages on, the world watches with a heavy heart, hoping for an end to the suffering and destruction.
