Tottenham fans, brace yourselves: João Palhinha has offered a heartfelt apology after a devastating 4-1 defeat to rivals Arsenal, but he's also promising a 'big reaction' in the upcoming matches.
The North London Derby delivered a painful blow to Spurs, as they were thoroughly outplayed at the Emirates Stadium. The team conceded twice in each half, with a paltry two shots on target, resulting in a mere 0.07 expected goals. This loss is especially stinging, considering it follows a string of disappointing performances.
Thomas Frank, only five months into his tenure at Tottenham, is facing a critical juncture. The defeat against Arsenal came on the heels of a 1-0 home loss to Chelsea and looms a challenging trip to Paris Saint-Germain.
Palhinha didn't mince words, expressing his disappointment: "We first of all need to say sorry to our supporters... I think we deserve. I think it is fair, the result and we need a big reaction." He emphasized the need for a strong response in the next two games, urging the team to rediscover their past form.
But here's where it gets controversial... Frank's tactical decision to switch from the usual 4-2-3-1 formation to a three-at-the-back system against Arsenal backfired spectacularly. Summer target Eberechi Eze was given too much space, ultimately scoring a hat-trick. A halftime adjustment to the original system did offer some improvement, but the damage was already done.
Palhinha acknowledged the shortcomings: "The ways we conceded the goals, especially playing with five at the back line, we cannot concede these goals. And coming here and being punished with four goals is not our level." He has promised that the team will give everything to secure victories in the upcoming games.
And this is the part most people miss... Palhinha also mentioned the Super Cup match against PSG, where Tottenham lost on penalties in August, using a similar formation. He added: "We tried to press them in the same way or a bit closer that we did in this [PSG] game, but yeah after we took the decision to change on half-time, I think the team improved."
