In a move that has sparked intense debate and raised serious concerns about press freedom, former CNN anchor turned independent journalist Don Lemon has pleaded not guilty to federal civil rights charges stemming from his coverage of an anti-ICE protest at a Minnesota church. Outside the courthouse, roughly two dozen protesters chanted slogans like “Pam Bondi has got to go” and “Protect the press,” holding signs that read “Lemon was just doing his job” and “ICE out.” Lemon’s attorney, Abbe David Lowell, has pledged to raise First Amendment issues in the case, arguing that Lemon was at the church as a journalist, not a participant. Lowell also demanded the return of Lemon’s phone, which was seized during his arrest in Los Angeles, calling its confiscation a potential “overreach.”
The charges against Lemon and eight others, including independent journalist Georgia Fort, stem from a January 18 protest at the church, where demonstrators interrupted a service by chanting “ICE out” and “Justice for Renee Good.” Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis just 11 days prior. A federal grand jury indicted Lemon on charges of conspiracy and interfering with congregants’ religious rights, though he maintains he was there solely to document the event for his livestream show.
