Comedy Legends: A Photographic Journey at Birmingham Museum (2026)

Get ready to chuckle, Birmingham! A brand-new photographic exhibition celebrating the UK's comedy legends is set to open its doors, and it's bringing the laughs right to the heart of the city. This isn't just any exhibition; it's a vibrant showcase of the faces behind the jokes, the comedians who've kept us in stitches for years.

The exhibition, titled 'I photograph comedians!', will be hosted at the Gas Hall within Birmingham's Museum and Art Gallery. Mark your calendars, comedy fans, because it runs from February 18th to May 31st. Prepare to be entertained by 80 studio portraits, all captured by the talented British photographer, Andy Hollingsworth.

The exhibition features some of the biggest names in British comedy, with a strong focus on talent from the West Midlands. You can expect to see familiar faces like Birmingham's own Jasper Carrott, the hilarious Jo Enright, the sharp-witted Shazia Mirza, and the ever-entertaining Joe Lycett. Also included are Wellington's Stewart Lee, and the legendary Lenny Henry, who hails from Dudley.

But that's not all! The exhibition promises more than just photographs. You'll also get a glimpse into the comedians' world with fascinating artifacts. On display will be a tour jacket worn by Lenny Henry during his 1984 tour, a signed pair of Rik Mayall's underpants (yes, you read that right!), and Joe Lycett's eye-catching Late Night Lycett teddy suit.

Andy Hollingsworth, reflecting on his work, shared, "This retrospective of my work over the last 30 years reflects the changing faces of comedy in the UK and my interaction with them." He expressed his delight at the exhibition's location, stating that Birmingham is a city that has produced many notable comedians and has a vibrant comedy scene.

Zak Mensah and Sara Wajid, co-chief executives of Birmingham Museums Trust, added that they are particularly delighted that the exhibition celebrates local talent. They also highlighted the inclusion of items connected with venues like Birmingham Hippodrome, Birmingham Odeon, and Wolverhampton's Wulfrun and Civic Halls, showcasing the region's contribution to popular culture.

The exhibition will be open from Wednesday to Sunday, between 10:00 and 17:00 GMT.
