Biniam Girmay's Dream Debut: NSN Cycling's First Win in Over a Year (2026)

A thrilling start to the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana! Biniam Girmay, in his dream debut with NSN Cycling, claimed a narrow victory in the opening stage, but it's the strategic moves of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe that have everyone talking.

The stage was a showcase of strength and tactics. Red Bull took control late in the race, powering up the only climb of the day, the Cat 3. Puerto de los Madroños. Their young Italian rider, Giulio Pellizzari, was sent ahead with a powerful attack, setting the stage for an exciting finish.

But here's where it gets controversial...

Red Bull's move split the peloton, leaving only 30 riders in the front group, including Remco Evenepoel, Pellizzari, and former winner Aleksandr Vlasov. This strategic move put their rivals in a tough spot. Should they chase, they'd essentially be handing Evenepoel an easy ride to the top spot, but if they waited, Pellizzari posed a significant threat.

And this is the part most people miss...

The chasers opted to wait, allowing the group to swell to over 70 riders. The pursuit of Pellizzari was intense, but his 30-second lead proved difficult to overcome, especially on the flat roads leading to the finish.

Bahrain Victorious, Ineos Grenadiers, and NSN joined the chase, but it was a dramatic coast-hugging pursuit through the streets of Torreblanco that finally brought Pellizzari back.

Ineos' Ben Turner initiated the sprint, but Girmay was right on his tail. His former teammate, Marit, tried to challenge, but as Marit later said, "Bini isn't the fastest off the mark, but once he hits top speed, he's unstoppable."

NSN's second win of the season continues their impressive streak, but Girmay's reign as the leader is expected to be short-lived as the overall battle intensifies on Thursday.

Stage two, a 17-kilometer rolling time trial, will be a crucial day for the general classification, even with the small gaps expected due to the short distance. With Evenepoel in the mix and Red Bull's morale high after their Mallorca triumphs, the main question is how much of an advantage the Belgian will gain, potentially claiming his third individual victory in less than a week.

So, what do you think? Was Red Bull's move a brilliant strategy or a risky gamble? Let us know in the comments!
