Tresa Brown, a North Carolina standout, set the bar high with her impressive stats, averaging 20.8 points and 8.5 rebounds. This award has been dominated by some of the game's greats, and the Mercury have had their fair share of ACC Player of the Year winners.
But here's where it gets interesting... Tracy Reid, a two-time winner in 1997 and 1999, also called North Carolina home. After a successful stint with the Tar Heels, she joined the Charlotte Sting, where she earned Rookie of the Year honors. Reid's journey continued with the Mercury, where she made her mark in 2002, starting 12 out of 24 games.
Monique Currie, another ACC Player of the Year winner, attended Duke and later joined the Mercury. Her impact was felt across the league, as she was traded to the San Antonio Stars before returning to Phoenix in 2017. Currie's story is a testament to the talent and versatility of these award-winning players.
And this is the part most people miss... Lindsey Harding, the 2007 ACC Player of the Year, was initially selected by the Mercury but was traded to the Minnesota Lynx. Harding's career flourished, and she eventually joined the Mercury in 2016, adding to the team's rich history.
Enter Alyssa Thomas, a more recent winner who dominated with her all-around game. Averaging 17.2 points, 8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.6 steals, Thomas not only won the award once but three times! She's in illustrious company, with the likes of Dawn Staley, Chelsea Gray, and Jewel Loyd also claiming the award during their college careers.
But the Mercury's connection doesn't end there. Kristi Toliver, another ACC Player of the Year winner, now serves as part of the Mercury's coaching staff.
The ACC Player of the Year award has a special place in the WNBA, and the Phoenix Mercury have been fortunate to have such talented players represent them. Thomas, in particular, has added to her legacy with several WNBA awards since her college days.
