2026 Australian WorldSBK Superpole: Bulega Dominates with Pole Position (2026)

Nicolo Bulega's Dominant Start: A Pole Position Masterclass at Phillip Island

The 2026 Australian WorldSBK season opener at Phillip Island witnessed an incredible display of skill and strategy. Nicolo Bulega, an Italian rider with a reputation for precision, dominated the Superpole session, setting a blistering pace that left his competitors in the dust.

Bulega's performance was nothing short of exceptional. He finished a remarkable 0.4 seconds ahead of Yari Montella, with Sam Lowes completing a Ducati front row lockout. This achievement is even more impressive considering Bulega's consistent performance throughout the week, including the tests on Monday and Tuesday, where he remained unbeaten.

But here's where it gets controversial... The second row saw a surprising display of power from the Bimotas, with Alex Lowes and Axel Bassani securing their spots ahead of the lead BMW ridden by Danilo Petrucci. Petrucci's teammate, Miguel Oliveira, faced a setback, crashing on his first flying lap at turn two, which prevented him from setting a time despite his efforts to get the bike back to the pits.

Row three featured the returning Lorenzo Baldassarri, who edged out Garrett Gerloff and Xavi Vierge, the sole Yamaha representative in the top 10. Alberto Surra, making his World Superbike debut, qualified an impressive 10th, joining fellow Ducati riders Tarran Mackenzie and Alvaro Bautista on row four for Race 1.

Iker Lecuona, on his factory Ducati debut, qualified 13th, while Andrea Locatelli's weekend continued to be challenging, finishing 15th and over 1.5 seconds off Bulega's pace.

The official records at Phillip Island were also broken by Bulega, who set the best lap time of 1m27.916s and the fastest race lap of 1m28.564s in 2024.

So, what do you think? Is Bulega's dominance a sign of things to come, or will the competition fight back? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! The 2026 World Superbike Championship is shaping up to be an exciting battle, and we can't wait to see how it unfolds.
